Coating Thickness XRF Standards

We offer a comprehensive selection of standards including but not limited to: thin and thick films (single and multi-layer), alloy films, bulk standards including alloys and pure elements, precious metal standards, WEEE/RoHS standards and other standards for a broad range of industrial and scientific applications.

Our XRF measurement applications experience and expertise in particular, allows us to specialize in developing difficult-to-make and custom-fabricated standards for clients with unique measurement needs, as well as instrument-optimized standards packages for all major manufacturers of XRF instrumentation. Our Foil Standards are used to calibrate XRF instruments to measure thin film and coating thickness and composition. Foils are produced using either sputtering, electroplating or mechanical rolling methods, which offer the advantage of wider range of applications and the ability to add foils together to produce additional thickness and/or multilayer film stacks. Due to their inherently fragile nature, all foils 1 micron or less are applied to a 3.6 micron Mylar foil for support and enhanced durability. Thicker foils may also be supported with thin organic (X-ray transparent) films for added support and durability. These foils are adhered to a stainless steel metal frame to facilitate handling and labelling, exposing a limited area of the foil for measurement. 

These are high purity films consisting of a single layer of single element, which can be placed over any blank substrate for XRF calibration. Single layer foils are used for calibration of one layer thickness testing applications by XRF.

Highly robust and durable, these standards are prepared by sputtering or plating thin films onto different metallic and non-metallic substrates. Their applications include calibration of XRF instruments to measure coating thickness and composition of sample films on same or similar substrates as the standards used to calibrate XRF. These are high purity, in almost all cases, single element films consisting of two separate layers, deposited on a solid, rigid, thick substrate. These standards are more robust and usually lower cost than corresponding foil standards but are generally applicable to one or a small set of coating thickness applications. Dual layer coating standards on substrates are used for calibration of XRF for simultaneous measurement of two layer thickness testing applications on samples with the same or similar substrates as the standards used to calibrate the XRF. If the substrate of the standard is not the same as the substrate of the sample being tested, please consult with your XRF provider before purchasing these standards. These standards are typically mounted in the same frames as foil standards exposing a limited area of the standard for measurement.

These standards are of thickness that exceeds the measurable range for XRF. Although not used for quantitative analysis, these standards can be used to normalize calibrations, to provide a blank base to place beneath certified foil standards for calibration, to obtain reference spectra for deconvolution operations, to allow derivation of fundamental parameter coefficients and to enhance qualitative analysis. Electron beam XRF users should consult with Micromatter before purchasing the Alloy type standards which are intended for quantitative composition analysis.

These standards, prepared by alloying 2 or more elements together, comprise of a thickness that is “infinite” or too thick to measure by XRF. Therefore, these standards are tested and certified for elemental composition, typically in terms of percentage weight. Their thickness is not certified as x-ray intensities detected for each element in the alloy vary with composition only and not vary with thickness.

Since the x-ray beams for such instruments tend to be larger, these standards are prepared with larger surface areas to accommodate easy calibration of portable XRF products.

Disclaimer - We discourage the use of larger foil standards for hand held XRF instruments due to potential damage of the standard when contact is made with the instrument.

These standards consist of a single layer of high purity film deposited on a specific substrate by sputtering or electroplating. They are solid, inflexible materials mounted onto anodized aluminum plates with cross hairs, to facilitate positioning and calibration of hand held XRF instruments. These standards can be used to calibrate portable, hand held XRF devices to measure samples with one layer coating films on substrates that are same as the standard coating and substrate in terms of elemental composition.

XRF Calibration Environment Standards

All MICROMATTER standards are prepared by vacuum deposition resulting in a highly uniform deposit. In most cases the standards present an element free of interferences and are thin enough to ignore thickness effects. Where it is necessary to use compounds or semi-compounds, the companion elements are chosen to minimize interference and provide stability. While high-purity is not critical in these thin films, materials used are 99.9% pure or better. Certification is provided for each calibration standard.

The areal density of each deposit is determined by precision weighing and/or verification by XRF spectrometry. Our standards are certified to ±5%. Custom thicknesses are also available. MICROMATTER manufactures thin film standards for most elements of the periodic system.

For over 51 years, MICROMATTER has earned a reputation for quality. MICROMATTER is in the process of extending its manufacturing and quality assurance capabilities to include metal standards (≥1 µm for most elements and alloys). Research and development efforts are currently underway towards a large variety of new high quality products.

For rapid check of an instrument’s energy calibration, custom multi-element standards are available. These multi-element standards consist of multi-layer thin film coatings, one on top of the other, upto a maximum of 6 elemental coatings. It is generally recommended to have coating thicknesses < 20 µg/cm2, so as to cause negligible notable matrix effects, in particular absorption of X-rays emitted in lower deposits by those covering them.

These standards are usually custom made on various substrates, and can also be used as accelerator targets, RoHS Calibration standards, etc, depending on the application.

With the introduction of diamond-like carbon foils more in 2008, Micromatter established a new generation of stripper foil products of unparalleled mechanical and physical properties. Further research and development led to the discovery of layered boron hybrid foils, and more recently, graphene based carbon films. Scientific institutions and isotope production facilities worldwide have come to rely on our carbon foil products because of their outstanding mechanical robustness and long lifetime in intense ion beams.

MICROMATTER diamond-like carbon (DLC) foils are manufactured using a proprietary laser plasma ablation process. An intense laser beam is used to evaporate carbon from a graphitic sputter target. In the process, the graphite structure of the source material is converted into nano-particles, which deposit on prepared substrates as diamond-like carbon. The properties of these unique carbon foils make them useful in a variety of applications, in particular beam stripping, as backings for accelerator targets or x-ray attenuators. MICROMATTER DLC foils consist of homogeneously distributed carbon nano-particles, which gives them special mechanical properties. DLC shows high electrical resistivity, remarkable hardness, and good thermal conductivity. In addition, DLC's mechanical strength makes the foils easier to handle and users are reporting that DLC foils are proving to be a superior choice in a number of applications.

MICROMATTER DLC foils are available in a wide range of thicknesses and sizes. Thin films are generally delivered on glass substrates coated with a release agent. Foils ≥ 0.5 µm can be produced self-supporting.

The mechanical stability of standard MICROMATTER DLC foils can be increased by sandwiching a thin layer of boron between two layers of diamond-like carbon. MICROMATTER DLC-B hybrid foils contain between 5% and 10% boron.

DLC-B foils have remarkable flexibility, higher tensile strength and hardness. In most applications, their lifetime in particle beams is significantly greater than regular DLC foils. DLC-B foils are recommended for applications that require highest mechanical robustness and improved durability under beam conditions.
MICROMATTER DLC-B foils are available in thicknesses between 0.25 µm and 5 µm and in various sizes.

MICROMATTER™ offers pure boron thin films for specialized beam stripping applications.

MICROMATTER™ boron foils are also produced by laser plasma ablation; however, the deposition process is much more complex and time consuming than that for diamond-like carbon. Accordingly, only thin films, mainly designed for beam stripping of heavy ions in electrostatic accelerators, are available. All films are generally delivered on glass substrates coated with a release agent.

MICROMATTER recently started the development of graphene based stripper foils for thicknesses ≥5 µm. At this time, graphene foils are not part of our regular product portfolio yet. A small quantity of research samples is available upon special request.

Micromatter offers highest quality, ready-to-use extractor foil sets for most types of biomedical and industrial cyclotrons. All Micromatter self-supporting diamond-like carbon, boron hybrid and graphene based foils are available as complete assemblies.

Customers can choose from a great variety of thicknesses and carbon materials. All commonly used foil sizes and thicknesses are kept in stock. Foils are attached to standard extraction forks specified by the cyclotron manufacturer using proprietary mounting processes. Typical holder materials are aluminum, graphite, and steel. Custom materials, such as titanium or tungsten, are available upon request. We ship frame mounted foils in special packaging to ensure the foils arrive at the customer’s facility without damage.

Customer Advisory on Boron Containing DLC Foils (‘Hybrid Foils’)

One of our competitors recently published content on their website advising against the use of boron containing ‘hybrid’ foils. Their website presents that “[Company name] does not produce hybrid carbon foils (i.e. boron) which introduce extra problems for radiation safety in laboratories”, citing their own product information as a reference.

Furthermore, it is stated that “Pinholes are observed to form spontaneously in hybrid type boron-carbon foils at temperatures above 1800 K, another reason why … [company name] does not offer hybrid foils.”

As far as Micromatter Technologies’ boron-DLC foils are concerned, these propositions are completely unfounded.

Firstly, the competitor based his activation argument on untenable assumptions about the interaction of stripper foils with low energy particle beams, such as those found in small medical cyclotrons, thus arriving at erroneous conclusions.

In addition, performance results published by a Japanese laboratory for a small number of experimental boron containing foils of different composition and microstructure were extended without justification to all ‘hybrid’ films.

We wish to assure our customers that boron containing foils produced by Micromatter Technologies are safe to use, and can be disposed of in the same manner as pure carbon foils. They are not susceptible to unexpected pinhole formation because of our particular manufacturing technique that affords robust nano-crystalline layered films of high temperature stability. Product Summary of Metal Foils

Alloys are substances with metallic properties that contain at least two metals and one or more other elements. Their composition as well as their physical and chemical characteristics can vary greatly. Common examples for alloys are steel, brass, and bronze. Depending on the desired thickness, Micromatter foils are produced by rolling, sputtering or vapor deposition. Many metals can be worked into self-standing foils, however, our thinnest films are supplied on polymer supports, such as Mylar®.
